山姆·尼尔出生在北爱尔兰的一个军人家庭里，8岁时他们全家移民新西兰。他中学上的是寄宿学校，然后去到英国坎特伯雷和维多利亚的大学主修英国文学，获得学士学位。毕业后随新西兰的“五人巡回剧团”做了一年表演。70年代初往影坛发展，并加入新西兰影片制作公司，在那里工作了六年时间，期间表演、导演、剪辑和编剧的工作都有所涉猎。 生平： 　　他的首部电影长片是《星际狩猎者》(Sleeping
